Tallapoosa River Georgia Section I

The Loyd Owens Canoe Trail on the Tallapoosa River officially begins within Cleburne County, Alabama. However, the two sections above the trail in Georgia are equally beautiful and worth running. In the spring, expect wildflowers galore and plenty of shade. Put in at bridge below water treatment plant on GA 100. You can park long enough at the fenced gate marked no trespassing to unload boats and carry them to the river. Move the vehicles quickly and park about a block south at the elementary school. DO NOT leave vehicles at the treatment plant area. The take out is just south of the bridge on US 78 as you are about to leave Alabama and enter into Georgia. Watch for small road on Alabama side of US 78 to take out -follow road approximately 1/2 mile crossing RR then you will see river on your left and parking area. Short but steep trip from parking area to river. Allow 5 hours easy float for the trip and about 20 minutes for the shuttle. Hazzards: Bridge pilings attract log jams along the river and create strainers. They could be serious trouble at high water.

Put In point: Georgia Hwy 100 approximately 5 miles north of Tallapoosa, Georgia. Follow Ga 100 north from US 78 and watch for the water treatment plant on right before you cross the river. On map
Take Out point: US Hwy 78 just inside Georgia

Rapids mostly: Class I
